City of Deltona issued the following announcement on July 17.
Deltona Water has hired USSI (Utility Sealing Services Inc.) to perform a routine, preventative, maintenance test to help identify leaks, defects and stormwater inflow into our sewer systems with the goal of improving wastewater treatment operations and efficiency. Beginning June 21, residents can expect to see smoke testing crews working in our city. While smoke is expected to be visible coming out of manhole covers and vent stacks in roofs, it should not enter homes.
The test consists of forcing safe smoke oil into the sewer lines and observing where it escapes in order to determine the location of leaks and defects. The smoke is odorless, creates no fire hazard, and leaves no residuals or stains. The smoke has no adverse effect on people, plants or animals. The test generally last about 15 minutes from start to finish.
Smoke testing should be completed, weather permitting, by early July. USSI will continually be in our community until late July, performing man-hole testing and additional monitoring. Some of the monitoring is done between 1 and 5 a.m., when consumer water usage is low.
A door hanger with more information will be left for many Deltona Water customers.
