Deltona High School issued the following announcement on Aug. 12.
It is our priority as a School Counseling Team to ensure that your student is enrolled in courses to fit his or her academic and future goals and to provide growth and a challenge academically.
A schedule change may be made for a sound academic reason under the following guidelines:
A student must request a change by the end of the first week of the course with good cause (incorrect class, missing class, etc.) and an appropriate alternative available. Any schedule change is contingent upon the availability and space in another suitable course. A request for change is not a guarantee if it is deemed not an appropriate change, not suitable for the student’s academic goals, will impact the student negatively, or the class is not available due to size.
Required steps to a schedule change:
- Fill out form on our DHS website completely.
- If a conversation regarding the change needs to be had, the school counselor will contact you directly via phone to acquire additional details.
- If the change is approved, you will see the schedule updated in Parent Portal and receive email confirmation.
- Please be patient as we process requests as quickly as possible. If you do not hear a response within 48 hours (business days), please follow up with an email to Dr. Lapnow cllapnow@volusia.k12.fl.us
If you do not have access to Parent Portal, please see:

A note concerning Reading class placements:
Please note that students placed into Reading courses are based on multiple inputs of data set out by the state. Progress and placement are mandated and monitored by the state. Reading courses may not be dropped. Reading courses are designed to meet individual needs of different tiers of student achievement and are necessary for support for academic success. Once proficiency is met (proficiency on the FSA ELA 10 -required for graduation), a reading course placement will no longer be required by the student.
A note concerning college and career readiness:
We believe deeply in the importance of preparing students for the next steps after Deltona High School. We are striving to reach 100% of our graduates to be prepared for a college track, a career track, and ultimately a combination of both. We encourage all students to attempt advanced coursework and college coursework.
