A year ago , a tornado ripped through the heart of the community

Storm

City of DeLand, FL issued the following announcement on Aug.18.

A year ago, a tornado ripped through the heart of our community, damaging dozens of homes and snapping and uprooting countless trees, vestiges of our city’s past that back dated back to our founding. Fortunately there was no loss of life that day but the storm affected us nonetheless.

One thing the storm did not break was our community’s resilience. Even despite the pandemic and our many differences, we saw what makes this community thrive: all of our amazing residents. We saw people helping people, it stirred our hearts and a call to action and awakened our spirit.

Hopefully we never have to go through something like that again, but if we do, we know our city and our community will pull through.

We posted some pictures from that day - not sure we published all of these amid the chaos. Here at City Hall we were all shocked at the flooded streets before we started getting word of damage in the north end of town. Amazing to think a year has passed since then.
