City of DeLand issued the following announcement on Jan. 21.
Celebrated DeLand’s Arbor Day with 4th and 5th graders at Freedom Elementary. We had the pleasure of having Mayor Bob Apgar open with DeLand’s Tree Proclamation followed by the 4th graders reading of Trees of Fragrant Forest. Three 5th graders shared their creative writings about trees and guest speaker John Wagner, former teacher and Arbor Day supporter, shared his favorite poem "Salute to the Trees" and some interesting facts about trees in Florida.
The DeLand Tree Advisory Committee and City of DeLand Nursery presented the school with a large Bald Cypress to plant in front of the school and in addition, each 4th and 5th grader in DeLand will receive a small Sand Oak tree to plant at home.
National Arbor Day is April 29, 2022 but each state recognizes their own Arbor Day.
The City of DeLand has been designated by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA for the 35th consecutive year and is also recognized as a Tree City of the World. The distinction recognizes communities that practice sound urban forestry management. To be a Tree City USA, cities must maintain a tree board or department, have a community tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrate Arbor Day.
Thank you to all those who participated this morning and we hope the students enjoy planting their tree and helping DeLand continue to be a Tree City!
