Volusia County launches anti-litter campaign

Megaphone gd7b38fb34 1280

Volusia County issued the following announcement on Jan. 28.

With over 1,400 square miles, Volusia County has a lot of land; for comparison, the county is larger than the state of Rhode Island!

The area is blessed with a wealth of natural beauty, including beaches, rivers and natural lands such as preserves, parks and conservation lands. And while use and appreciation of these lands is important, so too is respect.

That’s why the county is launching a social media campaign to address the litter problem and ways individuals can get involved and help solve this issue. We can all do our part to #KeepVolusiaBeautiful, but it’s going to take every one of us making a concerted effort and understanding that #EveryLitterBitCounts.

While the campaign taglines are new, the county’s efforts to reduce and combat litter are not. Many divisions within Volusia County Government champion initiatives to keep the county free of debris.

Examples of how individuals or groups can get involved include adopting a segment of beach, park, road or trail; participating in the annual county-sponsored river and coastal cleanups; or sponsoring a Fill-a-bag station. Visit Volusia.org/litter to review a comprehensive list of all the county’s efforts and learn how you can get involved.

Beyond organized initiatives, reducing litter comes down to personal responsibility and putting in the effort to make a difference. According to the latest Litter in America Study, if everyone made the individual action of picking up 152 pieces of litter (all at once), there would be no litter on the ground until someone littered again. Every individual’s actions make a difference. Remember there’s no excuse for littering! And if you really want to go the extra mile, when you see trash, pick it up because #EveryLitterBitCounts to #KeepVolusiaBeautiful.
