The Indigo Bluegrass BBQ on February 26, 2022

Grill

West Volusia Regional Chamber of Commerce recently issued the following announcement.

The Orianne Center for Indigo Conservation in Florida (OCIC), founded in 2011 by the Orianne Society, was acquired by the Central Florida Zoological Society in 2014. The center is a key contributor to the reintroduction of the threatened Eastern Indigo Snake.  Why is this important?  The Eastern Indigo is at the top of the food chain in the southeastern region of the United States.  Top predators, like the Indigo, provide balance by preventing the damaging overpopulation of other species, including venomous snakes.

At the OCIC, our teams work to repopulate the threatened species through a breeding and release program in partnership with others.  We are the only breeding center, and hatchlings are often sent out to partner facilities to help them grow until they are ready for release, usually about two years.

This important program is hosting its First Annual Indigo Bluegrass BBQ with the Fiddle Rat Band and more!
