In 2017, the West Indian manatee was removed from the Endangered Species list to the Threatened Species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to population growth. In 2021, 1101 manatees died in the state of Florida, 1.7 times the 5-year average and the highest mortality rate of any year on record. A 30-minute activity sheet, centered on Casey Ramey’s ceramics and wood installation, “2021 Manatee Mortality, Volusia County,” guides you through this compelling exhibit that examines the plight of manatees in the Indian River Lagoon, especially Volusia County. Safer Stetson protocols will be in place, and masks will be required of all visitors.
