Handshake1000

Sheriff Mike Chitwood honored some great work this week with  some special guests in attendance!

Recognized were Deputy of the 4th Quarter Deputy Charles Smith; Detective of the 4th Quarter Detective Sgt. Bobby Woell; and Volunteer of the 4th Quarter COP Keith Miller.

Deputy Smith was joined by his father Sgt. Charles Smith and his uncle, Sheriff Gordon Smith - Bradford County Sheriff.

We were also joined by Tom Leek, Florida House of Representatives, District 25, who discussed issues including his recently passed bill, H.B. 3, supporting law enforcement officers and their families. Thank you Rep. Leek for your hard work in Tallahassee!

Here's more about this week's awards:

Deputy of the 4th Quarter: Deputy Charles Smith

Since joining Delta shift in District 2, Deputy Charles Smith has shown a proficiency in proactive policing that gets results and positively impacts the community he serves. In the past several months, Deputy Smith has made more than 80 arrests – 30 of those were narcotics-related arrests resulting in the seizure of various illicit substances and collection of valuable intelligence.

In addition, during proactive patrol he seized five firearms from being illegally possessed by individuals since he joined Delta shift. These examples demonstrate the outstanding work Deputy Smith performs every day. Not only does he perform at a high level, he has a great outlook on law enforcement and enjoys serving the community. Numerous citizens have reached out to commend Deputy Smith on their positive interactions with him.

His professionalism and work ethic exemplify the high standards set by the Volusia Sheriff's Office for his peers and fellow deputies to emulate.

Detective of the 4th Quarter: Sergeant Bobby Woell

During the third and fourth quarters of 2021, Sgt. Bobby Woell has risen to the challenge of becoming an outstanding detective supervisor, managing and supervising day-to-day operations of the Volusia Bureau of Investigations. This role was somewhat thrust upon Sgt. Woell after his partnering supervisor had to take a several-month medical leave. Sgt. Woell had only been assigned as the VBI supervisor for a short time; however, he drew on his training, experience and overall knowledge of operating a drug task force and conducting high-level narcotic investigations.

Sgt. Woell is an excellent communicator, strategist and planner. These skills aided him greatly in supervising and managing wire-tapping operations, multiple coordinated search warrant executions and after-action reporting. His outstanding professionalism, performance and dedication are second to none.

Volunteer of the 4th Quarter: Keith Miller

During his time in the Citizen on Patrol (COP) program, Keith Miller has been an engaging and enthusiastic volunteer, bringing significant value to the program. At the time of the Coronavirus shutdown, he went above and beyond to make a difference.

Besides traffic control duties, Miller helps out with special events and employee appreciation functions.

His volunteer work is greatly appreciated, and we are delighted to have him on board. In addition to his many contributions to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, He is also an asset to the citizens of Volusia County.

Congratulations to all, and thanks for all the effort you put into your job!
