Open burning of yard waste in the City of DeLand is only allowed when:
- The fire is set back 25 feet from any wildlands, brush, or combustible structure, 50 feet from any paved public roadway, and 150 feet from any occupied structure other than that owned or leased by the individual conducting the burn
- The fire is in a non-combustible container or restricted to a pile no greater than 8 feet in diameter
- A residential burn permit has been turned in to Station 81 and signed off by DFD fire official.

This homeowner was able to get the fire under control with his garden hose, but it could have very easily spread to the home which was only a few feet away.
