The Volusia County Courthouse in DeLand will have a new courtroom about this time next year.
ksonville-based Ajax Building Company will provide construction management and general contracting services under a contract unanimously approved Tuesday by the Volusia County Council. The project will include construction of a new courtroom on the third floor of the courthouse and renovations to the second floor of the building to create office space to relocate the court administration staff from the third floor.
The work could begin as early as this August and is expected to take about nine months to complete. Normal court activity won’t be disrupted during construction.
“We’re also doing all work after court hours to not disturb ongoing proceedings,” Facilities Management Director Jim Corbett told the council.
The contract approved Tuesday established a guaranteed maximum price of $2,483,012 for the project. The courtroom work will include features such as security upgrades, fire protection improvements, audio-visual technology, a holding cell and layout to ensure the separation of defendants, judges and juries.
The courthouse on North Alabama Avenue opened in 2001.
