Oceanfront property owners can learn how to safely illuminate their properties without endangering nesting sea turtles and hatchlings during a free Beach Lighting Expo from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 27, in the Daytona Beach Shores Community Center, 3000 Bellemead Drive.
Staff from Volusia County’s Environmental Management Division, along with other industry experts, will educate residents about sea turtles, the county’s lighting ordinance and appropriate beachside lighting methods through a series of presentations, including:
1:30 to 2:15 p.m.: County staff will explain the sea turtle lighting ordinance.
2:30 to 3:15 p.m.: A representative from Coastal Connections will describe the sea turtle friendly certification, a hospitality program that engages and creates eco-minded travelers.
3:30 to 4:15 p.m.: County staff will provide an overview of Volusia County’s habitat conservation plan.
4:30 to 5:10 p.m.: A member of the Sea Turtle Conservancy will present “Turtle friendly lighting: A win for turtles and humans.”
5:10 to 5:30 p.m.: A SESCO Lighting employee will present “Bridging the gap: Understanding wildlife sensitive solutions.”
5:45 to 6:30 p.m.: County staff will explain the sea turtle lighting ordinance.
Local businesses and manufacturers will display their sea turtle friendly products, which include lighting fixtures, shields, tinting and window treatments. Vendors will include Florida Power & Light, SESCO Lighting, Florida Lighting Associates, Blue Square, Lighting Aesthetics, SELS Solar, ET&T, US Blinds and Del Mar Fans & Lighting.
Agencies and nonprofits that support environmentally friendly initiatives will also be on site. They include the Volusia Sea Turtle Habitat Conservation Plan, Volunteer Volusia, Marine Science Center, Sea Turtle Conservancy, New Smyrna Beach Turtle Trackers, Volusia Turtle Patrol and Coastal Connections.
