Volusia County Emergency Management is urging residents to take precautions his weekend for the excessive heat forecast for the area.
Portions of Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi are under heat advisories. While the heat advisory thus far hasn’t been extended into Volusia County, temperatures for this area are projected to reach as high as 99°F on Saturday – with the high humidity making it feel as hot as 104°F-107°F. The heat index will peak Saturday afternoon, with the extreme heat conditions expected to continue into Sunday afternoon. Residents should stay out of the sun for long periods of time, drink plenty of fluids and stay in an air-conditioned room as much as possible.
For residents who are outdoors this weekend and in need of an air-conditioned break from the heat, Volusia County libraries will be a good place to get a cool-down. Ten libraries in Daytona Beach, DeBary, DeLand, Deltona, Edgewater, New Smyrna Beach, Ormond Beach and Port Orange will be open on Saturday and six of the libraries will also be open on Sunday.
“In extreme conditions, it’s critically important for people to be cautious and manage their risk,” said Volusia County’s interim emergency management director, Jim Judge. “This isn’t something to take lightly. With the excessive heat, the best thing to do is stay indoors in the air conditioning. If you have to go outside, don’t be in the sun for a long time, avoid strenuous activity and be sure to stay hydrated.”
