Superintendent's Announcements and Comments
Four Volusia County School sites will be open as shelters for Volusia
Hurricane Ian came unwelcomed but our staff did an amazing job not only in front of but also behind the scenes. I’m extremely proud of our entire team. They all went above and beyond and did their part to get our schools open for our students.
We have launched a 90-day district fundraising campaign where we are working with our partners in education to support our very own staff members who were affected by the hurricane, to help stabilize as best as we can.
Spruce Creek Elementary Teacher, Lisa Bowers said it best when she posted on Facebook that the best part about Wednesday is that when she gets to her school, she will get to see her 2nd graders who are very special to her. It reminds us with that statement, that our school families, they need us.

Items from the Board
SBM Colón – I do have a question for Dr. B. Can you give us an update on where we are in regards to the hurricane makeup days and what that process would look like and what should we expect?
Superintendent Dr. Balgobin's response - We received an invite to have a conference call to have a conversation with the commissioner of education and his team. One of the announcements that were made was that there would not be any waivers per se for the instructional minutes lost. Each district has to go back and evaluate its instructional minutes because there are guidelines about the minutes in place. We have taken all of that into consideration, and I have a proposal that I will be sharing with Mrs. Albert during our monthly meeting tomorrow, and then if approved it will be announced.
SBM Cuthbert – Our transportation department transported so many people in I want to thank our transportation department who transported a lot of the people from their homes to the Ocean Center, to our hurricane shelters. It's also a way for us to say thank you for the half-cent sales tax as we do open up our schools for the elections, for the hurricane, and even the fact fairs. A lot of community events occur in our schools. We are joining our community so much more. I have gotten to know a lot about Deltona and to see what has occurred in the last 18 years is just night and day. The progress that the staff has made is just astronomical. Deltona HS is just one example of so many of our schools in the county. We know for every hour a teacher puts in, it takes three hours of planning. We know of all of the effort and the work that is going on behind the scenes when we see our kids perform at the beginning of our board meetings. To see our county grow from this perspective as I was always at a school perspective, and in the 8 years that I've been on the board we have had great strides! Without a great leader at the top, all of our other leaders cannot perform so thank you for our leadership and all those who work at our county.
SBM Persis – I really loved seeing the Deltona HS kids here. They are so deserving of recognition. I want to thank those who participated in the coalition meeting. After the meeting, there must have been 3 or 4 districts that contacted us and wanted our presentation. I wanted to express my personal thanks to Dr. Balgobin and Mr. Johnson for their 24/7 response in regard to the hurricane response leading up to the response and afterward.
SBM Burnette – It's everybody working together. It's a true team. By us going to Lee County, it shows that we care about our neighbors. It would be nice if this is the way we were all the time in the community everywhere, it would be a much nicer environment to be around. It is more than just three days before the hurricane or three days after. As we know we have a situation with some Mainland homes that we are working on and that is a week out. We will take care of them. I appreciate you guys, Dr. Johnson, Dr. B for making sure that we know that those are our neighbors too.
SBM Haynes – Not present
