Tonight deputies responded to one of the worst calls imaginable. A 3-year-old boy has died after shooting himself with a handgun. The incident was reported at 6:22 p.m. at a home on the 2400 block of Nectarine Road in Daytona Park Estates, DeLand.
The investigation into what led to this tragedy is in its early stages, and further updates will be provided tomorrow. From Sheriff Mike Chitwood and the entire department, our sincere condolences go out to the grieving family members who just lost an innocent young loved one.
No media briefing will be held tonight, but please monitor this account for details on a briefing tomorrow. To the extent possible, we’d like to request respect of the family’s privacy at their worst hour.
UPDATE: News media: The briefing with Sheriff Chitwood on last night’s tragic incident will be held at 11 a.m. at VSO Training, 3901 Tiger Bay Road, Daytona Beach.
