A deputy from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office was shot and injured in Deltona on Monday evening. The suspect is now in custody.

According to an initial investigation, Deputy Jose Rivera and his trainee were at 2684 Candler Drive around 4:30 p.m. as part of an assault and battery investigation. They encountered Luis Diaz Polanco, who was the subject of their inquiry.

When deputies tried to speak with Polanco, he went back inside the house. The second deputy moved toward the rear of the property in case Polanco tried to leave through the back door. Instead, Polanco exited through the front door armed with a handgun and began shooting.

Deputy Rivera was hit in both his leg and shoulder after a bullet ricocheted off his chest-mounted body-worn camera.

Other deputies pulled Rivera to safety and brought him to Halifax Health / UF Health Medical Center of Deltona for stabilization. He was then transported by Air One helicopter to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He is expected to recover fully.

Polanco was arrested outside the residence without injury. Authorities interviewed him later that night, and he faces charges of attempted murder.

Two other individuals present at the property were detained during the early phase of the investigation but were found not to be involved in the incident.

Officials note that these details are preliminary and may change as the investigation continues.
