Meet some of our Sheriff’s Office school crossing guards who work at Volusia elementary schools and read why they love their job! It’s the perfect retirement job – meet lots of kids and parents. Keep people safe. Work an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon.

NOTE: We especially need crossing guards in Ormond Beach, Holly Hill, Daytona Beach, Port Orange and New Smyrna Beach. We have positions available. Please apply online at volusiasheriff.org/careers if you’re interested.                                        * * *Imagine guarding 137 students who cross a busy intersection to Sweetwater Elementary in Port Orange every morning. Talk about having an important job that makes a difference.

That’s what Terri Waller, a Volusia Sheriff’s Office school crossing guard, does every school day at Sweetwater Elementary in Port Orange. Today she was training Mary O’Rourke, who will be assigned to another Port Orange school soon. She joined because the hours are great on her retiree’s schedule.

Adds veteran Waller: “No two days are alike here but I love it. It’s the best job I’ve ever had.”

That’s because she gets to meet nice people, stay active and healthy, and keep kids safe. As children and parents approach to cross the roadway, she reminds kids: “Keep doing your search: look LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT. Because your friends are watching and you want to set a good example.”

Waller has spent five years as a crossing guard at Sweetwater and more than 27 years total as a guard at the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. “I like to teach kids the safe way to cross the road. Also, I teach the parents.”

She doesn’t mind rain, cold or heat because she has good equipment to do her job, Waller says. Including a pith helmet, which protects her from rain and birds. She gets to wear shorts all year long and she dons fun socks because kids wear crazy socks a lot.

Please help spread the word to your family and friends: We need more school crossing guards.  You can help!
